Smokey is trained as a reining horse, as well as his
background in cattle work here at home. At the First Canadian National Morgan
Show in Regina, 1997, Smokey earned the Championships in Working Cowhorse, Open
Reining and Freestyle Reining, showing a lot of folks that you can do it on a
Morgan. We received many nice comments on his beauty and good disposition as
well. Shown locally he always draws interest and places well every time out. He
has yet to be beaten in Working Cowhorse and in 2002 was the Grand Champion
Stallion at the Dawson County Open Horse Show.
Every outing to shows and stallion expos has brought more
lovely ladies to his court, both new and repeat breedings, Morgan mares and
other breeds. Smokey’s foals have been wonderfully consistent for correctness
and balance, cute trim heads and good dispositions. The older ones that we are
riding now have been very easy to start, all have wanted to work cattle from the
beginning and are smooth travelers with a lot of style.
You can breed to Smokey by AI using cooled semen transport
or you can bring your mare(s) to the ranch in April, May, June and July. His
breeding fee remains at $600 for Morgan mares, $500 for others. Mare care
is $6/day dry mares, $8/day with foal. Each year two breedings are available at
half price ($300) through the National Morgan Reining Horse Association and the
Western Working Morgan Futurities. Foals produced from breedings purchased in
that way are eligible for competition in good-paying futurity events. You can
contact me or those associations for more information if you are interested.
